Our Story

Picture
First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Nathallie (pronounced Natalie), and to the left of this text is a picture of me and my husband (and co-owner of Strictly Salt of Metairie), Stephen. We've been married for 6 years and we're both NOLA natives who now live in Metairie.

The very first thing you should know about me is that I suffer from terrible allergies. Sinus allergies, skin allergies, extensive food sensitivities, the works. My mother, who passed away in 2017 from interstitial lung disease, was constantly worried about my health. She worried that my allergies would eventually evolve into her lung disease and would leave me also disabled and dependent on oxygen tanks.

The story of Strictly Salt begins with a phone call from my mom. "Hey, I would like to send you on a trip. I was watching Dr. Oz just now, and he was talking about salt caves. He said that it's great for people who suffer from allergies and I really want  you try it and I want you to do some research on where these salt caves are and I want to send you to go spend a week at one!" Having never heard of salt caves, I turned to Google for some answers. The Wieliczka salt mine in Poland was the top hit. I opened up wikipedia and read up on the salt mine, remembering I had seen this featured in National Geographic years ago. Excited I called my mom and said "Heck yes, I'll take a trip to Poland!" --- That was not the answer my mom wanted to hear, of course. "Is there anything a little closer than Poland? Perhaps Cuba?" Now, lets get side tracked here for a second and explain her answer.
My grandparents left Cuba when my mother was 13 years old, leaving after Fidel Castro took over the government. So, we have strong cultural ties and loads of family still there, and she was always looking for opportunities to send us to visit family. Back to the original story... I searched for salt caves in Cuba and came up empty handed. My google searches lead me to Halotherapy. It turns out that several years ago, an older couple from Poland moved to the United States, both had lung issues. When they were ready to go spend a few days in a salt cave, there were none to be found! So, they worked together to create Halotherapy. Halotherapy seeks to recreate the microclimate in the salt caves of Europe by grinding down pharmaceutical grade salt into tiny micro particles and dispersing them in the air of a therapy room. The particles are so small that the salt crystals float in the air, where they are inhaled and land on your skin, providing loads of benefits.  Excited by this I started looking for the nearest Halotherapy room and found a listing for a halotherapy center within a 15 minute drive from where my mom was living outside of West Palm Beach. I already had a flight booked for a visit a few weeks later, so we decided to check it out.

Halotherapy completely changed my life. I loved it so much, I went back the next day for a session before heading back home to NOLA. Here, is what happened. For several weeks after my visit I experienced no more sniffles, no more sneezing, no more snoring, the most restful sleep I had had in months! The best part was I didn't need my allergy medications for a couple of weeks after my sessions. I was a total convert. After that, any time we visited relatives in Florida I was sure to squeeze in a halotherapy session! After a year of going to Florida every few months to see my mom and get some Halotherpay I told my husband, why don't we open up a halotherapy in Metairie? Living down here in the swamps, were battling oak tree pollen in the spring, grass in the summer, ragweed in the fall, mold pretty much all the time! We run the gamut for airborne allergens! Not to mention the benefit that it will bring to those who suffer from Interstitial lung diseases, COPD, Emphysema, Psoriasis and so much more. Stephen was totally on board and so we started this journey together! Our mission is to bring relief and wellness to our community and we really hope that you all decide to give us a visit soon! We can't wait for everyone to experience this therapy and I hope it will be life changing for all of you too!

Come and get salty with us!
